One spring, Fred, who was a medical student studying to become a doctor, began to feel very sad. It was May, the weather was beautiful, but Fred had many exams to take. Fred felt that the exams would be too difficult. Fred's sad feeling became so serious that the doctor advised him to enter the mental ward of the university hospital. I lived in the room next to his in the dormitory and as soon as 1 heard that he had entered the hospital, I went with Alvin, a cheerful and funny friend, to cheer him up. Alvin and ! told him jokes and funny stories of things that bad happened to our friends. We both tried our best to cheer him up. Many friends came to try to make Fred feel better but he did not improve. tie kept thinking of life in a darker and worse way. He felt that the future was bleak and that life was painful. Betty, a young nurse, decided to try to help him. She said to him, "There's a young, very beautiful girl who is going to have a serious operation. She's worried about the operation and she's feeling very sad. Why don't you write a letter to her to give her courage and try to help cheer her up ?" Fred felt very sorry for the young girl so he decided to write her a letter. He put much effort into the letter. He chose his words carefully and he corrected the letter many times. He talked about how much students have to be thankful for and how bright the future is for young people. Fred told the young girl that after her operation, he wanted to take her rowing on the lake near the university hospital. For two weeks, Fred wrote one letter every day. He put much thought and effort into writing the letters. All the letters were cheerful, encouraging and positive. Fred put much time into writing the letters and he kept thinking of the young girl. After two weeks, Fred was feeling much better. The doctor told him that he could go home. Before going home, Fred went to Betty, the you nurse who had told him about the sick girl and he said that he wanted I meet the young girl. Betty said, "I wanted to help you, so I made up the story of the young girl. There is no sick girl I created the story so that you would become interested in someone else besides yourself." Fred was shocked. He had learned an important lesson and he left the hospital with a new feeling. When i met Fred in the dormitory, he said to me, "Kenneth, man is strange indeed. He is happiest, not when he's thinking of himself, but when he is thinking of other people."
